Abstract

Across the globe, every society continuously seeks to highlight its antiquity, lineage, heritage, and contributions to human civilization. The Tamil people possess a legacy of antiquity, culture, and civilizational excellence comparable to that of the Greek, Egyptian, Roman, and Indus Valley civilizations. Ongoing research efforts are dedicated to uncovering and documenting this heritage; the Keeladi excavation is one such significant endeavor. Keeladi is located eight kilometers west of Thirupuvanam in the Sivaganga district—a site celebrated as a cradle of Tamil identity. To date, four rounds of excavations conducted by the Archaeological Survey of India and the Tamil Nadu State Department of Archaeology have unearthed 5,800 ancient historical artifacts. Among the seventeen ancient river-valley civilizations in Tamil Nadu, the Vaigai river civilization holds a unique distinction for its role in nurturing the Tamil language and culture.
